Shelter (for Mark)

The installation “Shelter” references one of humanities most longed for and desired conditions e.g. a home and security.
We strive not only for homes but safe places, both psychologically and physically. Without this, we become disoriented and experience a handicapping sense of being lost.
These seashells, with rigorous mathematically designed forms, are each unique in design, colour and texture.
They each represent a home for a live organism that once found shelter there.
Each shell is pulled downward from above by a strong gravitational pull, each finding its own path.
The shell is tethered to a secure apparatus above which allows it to drop to the floor but never lose its anchor.
Repeating these once inhabited shells by multiplying them and expanding their volume, we recognize correlations to our own internal dimensions and expanded experiences.
We are challenged to recognize it as an “emotional terrain” common to all.

"We recognize correlations to our own internal dimensions and expanded experiences."
We are challenged to recognize it as an “emotional terrain” common to us all.
Multitudes of coloured silk threads, fragile and indeterminate, yet taut with strained tension culminating in that longed for state of safety and shelter.
