Green Johnston

Rolls of artificial turf are laid over a pedestrian crosswalk on Johnston St. and the effect is observed on the movement of cars and pedestrians.
Temporarily installed at the crossing leading to the Emily Carr University of Art + Design on Vancouver’s Granville Island, Green Johnston is a moment in time defined by inserting an unexpected element into a familiar flow.

A commentary on “green space” in the urban context, Green Johnston temporarily re-gains territory from the gray of asphalt and concrete by creating a dramatic shift in hue, texture and material from the artificial grass.
“For a moment in time, people were interrupted by something that wasn’t there before but may have been a reminder of what used to be there before all the buildings, bridges, roadways and cars.”
